Seek the Lord

Below are my sermon notes from yesterday. The Lord continues to use this text this morning to compel me to seek Him!

Why not To Worry?

Matthew 6, Verses 25-34

A.  God commands us not to worry-

Explanation

1.  Do not worry about your life. (v. 25) food, drink, or clothing

2.  Do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?”

Or “What shall we wear”. (v. 31 and 32)

3.   Do not worry about tomorrow. (v. 34)

“Do not worry” is a present imperative (v. 25) which means Jesus is saying “Quit Worrying” Aorist subjunctive in verse 31 and 34 “Don’t start worrying,”

Argumentation:

1 John 2:5 says, “But whoever keeps his word, truly in him the love of God is made complete. This is how we know we are in him”

Application:

We can seek the Lord by being obedient to His Word.

B.   Worrying does not do any Good-
Explain:

Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? (v. 27)

Illustration:

When is the last time you helped a situation by worrying about it?

Argumentation:

Philippians 4:6 says, “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Illustration:

Dr. Charles Mayo of the Mayo clinic wrote, “Worry affects the circulation, the heart, the glands and the whole nervous system.  I have never met a man or know a man to die of overwork, but I have known a lot who died of worry.”

Application:

We can seek God when we begin to worry by stopping and praying.

C.  God is able to meet our needs-He is sufficient.
Explain:

When we worry really what we are doing is not trusting God.  Any relationship that is going to last must be built on trust.

Look at the birds of the air,(v. 26)

So why do you worry…(v. 28-30)

Argumentation:

2 Timothy 1:12 says, “But I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me,y until that day.”

Application:

We can seek God by completely surrendering our circumstances to Him.

D.    Worrying is not Seeking-

Explain:

Jesus commanded us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these other things shall be added unto you.  Take one day at a time, always keeping your eyes on Jesus.  The cause of worry is seeking after the things of this world, contentment comes when you seek after the things of God’s kingdom (not ours) and His righteousness (not ours) (5:20).

Argumentation:

Jeremiah 29:13 “You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart.”

Hebrews 11:6 “Now without faith it is impossible to please God, since the one who draws near to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”

Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you.”

Seek Him!!
