Oh Glorious Day!

Every once in a while, someone comes up to me after a worship service, bible study, speaking engagement etc . . . and asks a simple question. “Brother Tommy, how are you always so happy (energetic, passionate, or some other similar word). My answer has always been, and I pray always will be the same. “I just cannot get over what Jesus has done, is doing, and has promised to do!” I can’t help myself. There are so many times that I have thought I might need to just settle down a bit, maybe try to act more dignified, but it never fails that I am consistently overwhelmed with the greatness of an almighty God!

What reminds you of the amazing Savior that we serve? Certainly Scripture and prayer are consistent sources of encouragement and increase my passion for the Lord. The fellowship of other believers is a constant blessing to me. I also love to be reminded of the Gospel through music and singing. My favorite songs to sing are songs that just walk through the Gospel. The life, death, burial, resurrection, and soon return of our Lord Jesus Christ. “O Glorious Day” is a wonderfully written message in song that just simply walks through the Gospel.

It begins in heaven with God’s plan of redemption, walks through the virgin birth and Jesus coming to earth, how He dwelt among men as was the perfect example. Oh, but that’s not all, it continues in the second verse in how Jesus went up to Calvary, was nailed to a tree, suffered, was despised and rejected and died for our sins. The third verse continues, with the amazing reminder that the grave could not hold our Savior, the stone rolled away, He arose and conquered death and the grave. The verse concludes with the reminder that He is ascended and lives evermore. By this point in the song I am normally overwhelmed with joy, praise,  & gratitude as I am reminded of what Jesus has done, of who He is, and the glorious, eternal, life altering work of the GOSPEL! I have not, and I again pray that I never will lose the sense of awe and wonder of our glorious Jesus and the good news.

However, I do have a solemn thought, and a loving reminder. There have been times when my joy was not as vibrant as it is in this stage of my life. There have been seasons when busyness, circumstances, and even sin have robbed my joy, and have tempered my passion for Jesus. May I get personal just for a moment? Have you in anyway lost the wonder of the Gospel? I am not suggesting that you have to act like me, but can you say as passionately as anytime in your life that you stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene? Wow, that is another great song!

You notice I did not mention the final verse, one day He is coming back to take us to be with Him. How will He find us? Will He find us just going through the motions, or may it be that He finds us continually overwhelmed with awe and gratitude, that we cannot help but serve Him with every ounce of passion within us! How about just read the words of “Oh Glorious Day.” Take a few moments and think of nothing or no one but Jesus, and just stand in amazement of Jesus!

One day when Heaven was filled with His praises

One day when sin was as black as could be

Jesus came forth to be born of a Virgin

Dwelt among men, my example is He

Word became flesh and the light shined among us

His glory revealed

Living He loved me, dying He saved me

And buried He carried my sins far away

Rising He justified freely forever

One day He’s coming, oh, glorious day, oh, glorious day

One day they led Him up Calvary’s mountain

One day they nailed Him to die on a tree

Suffering anguish, despised and rejected

Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He

Hands that healed nations, stretched out on a tree

And took the nails for me

‘Cause living He loved me, dying He saved me

And buried He carried my sins far away

Rising He justified freely forever

One day He’s coming, oh, glorious day, oh, glorious day

One day the grave could conceal Him no longer

One day the stone rolled away from the door

Then He arose, over death He had conquered

Now He’s ascended, my Lord evermore

Death could not hold Him

The grave could not keep Him from rising again

Living He loved me, dying He saved me

And buried He carried my sins far away

Rising He justified freely forever

One day He’s coming, oh, glorious day, oh, glorious day

Glorious day

One day the trumpet will sound for His coming

One day the skies with His glories will shine

Wonderful day, my beloved one bringing

My Savior Jesus is mine

Living He loved me, dying He saved me

And buried He carried my sins far away

Rising He justified freely forever

One day He’s coming, oh, glorious day, oh, glorious day

Glorious day, oh, glorious day!
